Through balls seemed to work particularly well (although sometimes, perhaps they were a little too effective). I loved the way the passing game worked, responding well to the indicated direction and strength placed on each pass.

Like many of you, I don't know how it compares with PES 2014, but this version of PES 2015 for PS4 gave me the best experience I have had with the series in several years. Don't be alarmed: PES didn't become a clone of FIFA overnight, but when playing PES I simply tried to play football, and football's exactly what I got. In recent years the transition when jumping between FIFA to PES has been somewhat difficult for me, weird even.

(You can still play the demo should you wish, head here for more details.) The delay of the PES demo was a bad day for PES fans, but happily, I had the opportunity to play several matches during a special hands-on demo of the game (which included countries, instead of clubs) at a recent event. But for now, I would like to share with you my impressions of PES 2015. Do not worry however, when the final review is written it'll be by a PES specialist. Thus, it is difficult for me to classify or evaluate PES 2015 compared to previous, recent editions of the game. It's not that PES was bad necessarily, but FIFA has improved so much over the years until, it was hard to ignore, and eventually it took over. However, like many other players, in the last generation I crossed the great console divide and now I play my football with EA Sports and their FIFA franchise. It all began on SNES, passed on to the N64, and it blossomed on the earlier PlayStation platforms.

My relationship with Pro Evolution Soccer started years ago. Usually, I try not to publish articles with such a personal perspective, but forgive me this small exception. If anyone out there understands the instructions about agents (used to sign players in this acid-trip of a mode) then you might need to lay off the prescription meds. This is PES 2015 preview. Much like the ‘esoteric’ charms of Master League (itself back and as daft and compulsive as ever), m圜lub drowns you in the most baffling jargon before letting you go about the business of building a team. Very PES, because it appears to have been put together by madmen. It’s a shame it can’t be played cooperatively, but it’s still a step up from PES 2014’s broken online mess.Īn even more obvious ‘homage’ to FIFA comes in the form of m圜lub, a very PES take on Ultimate Team. The typical competitions (including the Champions League license) are joined by a FIFA-apeing online seasons mode, that lets you progress up the ranks by beating the world’s PES players in low-latency contests. It’s really rather good.īacking up the fantastic match engine is a front-end that finally feels like it’s from a modern videogame and not patched together by the work experience boy.

It’s the agony and the ecstasy of football, but also the drudgery and frustration. This is a game of curling 30 yarders and scuffed tap-ins, of mistimed slide tackles and rounded-keepers. Simple footballing fundamentals, that when combined with PES 2015’s marvellous simulation physics, creates moments of football drama, without the need to script them.Īt its best, PES 2015 captures the PS2 heyday of the series at its best, but does so with the kind of production values our mid-2000 selves could only dream of. Beat a man by convincing him you’re zigging when you’re actually zagging. It’s about timing, weight distribution and angles.

Dribbling isn’t reliant on tricks (although they’re in there). Dig just a little deeper, though, and PES demonstrates a unique understanding of how football actually works. At face value, the two games look very similar-both offer snappy passing games, a wide variety of shot types and crunching slide tackles. It’s this attention to detail that elevates PES above its nearest and richest competitor.
